What a Poodle portrait needs to get right
Elegant. Intelligent. And far more athletic than the fancy haircut suggests. Poodles are consistently ranked as one of the smartest dog breeds in the world, and they carry themselves with a grace and awareness that shows it. Behind the curls is a dog with depth, and a custom portrait captures that beautifully.

Why Poodles Make Incredible Portraits
Poodles are portrait royalty. The breed has been immortalized in art for centuries, from Renaissance paintings to modern photography, and there's a reason artists keep coming back to them. The curly coat creates extraordinary visual texture. The proportions are elegant and balanced. The face projects intelligence and poise. Every element works together to produce a portrait that feels sophisticated without trying.
The coat is the defining artistic feature. Poodle curls catch and scatter light in complex patterns, creating depth and dimension that flat-coated breeds can't match. Whether your poodle has a full show coat, a sporting clip, a puppy cut, or a natural grown-out look, the curly texture translates into portraits with incredible richness. Each curl is a detail that adds to the overall composition. In Color and Ink Wash styles especially, poodle coats produce some of the most visually interesting portraits we create.
Poodles also come in a remarkable range of solid colors: black, white, cream, apricot, red, silver, blue, cafe au lait, brown, and gray. Each color creates a completely different portrait mood. A white standard poodle in Black & White looks sculptural and dramatic. A red miniature poodle in Color radiates warmth. A silver poodle in Ink Wash looks ethereal. The monochromatic coat (poodles are always solid-colored) means the face and expression are never competing with a busy pattern for attention.
All three sizes, standard, miniature, and toy, photograph equally well. The proportions are the same regardless of size, which means the portrait approach works identically whether your poodle is 60 pounds or 6 pounds.
Color Portrait
Color showcases the beautiful solid tones of poodle coats: the deep apricots, the warm reds, the cool silvers, the rich blacks. Combined with the curly coat texture, Color portraits of poodles have a depth and richness that's hard to beat. The most popular choice for poodles with distinctive coat colors.
Ink Wash
Ink Wash and poodle curls are a match made in portrait heaven. The flowing, painterly brushstroke style mirrors the natural movement of a curly coat, creating a portrait that has the soft, brushed look of traditional ink painting. Particularly stunning for white and silver poodles, where the subtle tonal variations come alive in this style.
Professional Black & White
Black and white turns a poodle into sculpture. The curly texture becomes a study in light and shadow, and the elegant facial proportions command attention. White poodles in Black & White produce a striking, high-contrast look. Black poodles in this style show incredible detail in every curl. The most sophisticated option for framed prints and poodle memorial portraits.
Marker
Marker brings out the playful side that poodle parents know well. Behind the elegant exterior is a funny, athletic, slightly mischievous dog. Marker's bold lines and vivid colors capture that hidden personality beautifully. A great choice for parents who know their poodle is more clown than aristocrat.
Can I get a portrait of any size poodle?
Yes. Standard, miniature, and toy poodles all produce beautiful portraits. The proportions are the same across all three sizes, so the portrait approach works identically.
Which portrait style is best for poodles?
Color and Ink Wash are the two most popular styles. Color showcases the coat color beautifully, while Ink Wash complements the curly texture in a way that feels painterly and artistic. Upload your photo and preview all styles free to compare.
Does my poodle's grooming clip affect the portrait?
Yes. The portrait will reflect whatever grooming clip your poodle has in the photo. Use a photo from a grooming style you love, whether that's a show clip, puppy cut, sporting clip, or natural look.

I have a black poodle. Will the portrait show the curls?
Yes, as long as the source photo has good lighting. Soft natural light creates highlights on the curl tops that give the portrait depth and texture. Avoid dim or harsh lighting that flattens the coat into a solid dark mass.
What's the difference between a poodle portrait and a doodle portrait?
Purebred poodles have tighter, more uniform curls and solid coat colors, while doodles have varied curl patterns and often multi-colored coats. Both produce beautiful portraits, but the aesthetic is different. We have a dedicated doodle portrait page if your dog is a poodle mix.
My poodle has passed. Can I still get a portrait?
Yes. If you've lost your poodle, we're so sorry. Any photo you love will work, even older or imperfect ones — an artist reviews every portrait before it prints. Black & White and Ink Wash are gentle fits for memorial pieces. When you're ready, our memorial portrait page has more guidance.
